How do I get rid of FUPA fat?
FUPA stands for Fat in the Upper Pubic Area and represents a soft pad of tissue just above the pubic bone. It is very common, especially after pregnancy, weight gain, weight loss or abdominal surgery like a C-section. It can also occur naturally due to genetics or ageing.
FUPA fat tends to be stubborn and even with diet and exercise many patients find that this area doesn’t reduce in size.
So what are the treatment options if you don’t see meaningful improvement despite optimising your nutrition and engaging in regular exercise?
For patients with mild, localised fat deposits and good skin tone, cryolipolysis or ‘CoolSculpting’ in a non-invasive technique that uses controlled cooling to freeze and destroy fat cells. The advantage is that the procedure doesn’t involve anaesthesia and is non-invasive but with the caveat that results can be unpredictable and repeat sessions are often needed.
For patients with mild to moderate excess, liposuction can be used to remove excess fat from the area. This is sometimes combined with radiofrequency assisted skin tightening techniques such as Bodytite or Quantum to achieve the result that patients desire.
For those who have more significant excess in terms of fat and loose skin, then we may need to consider excisional procedures where we directly remove and tighten the fat and skin over the pubic area.
The ultimate goal of any treatment is to provide patients a smooth and natural contour to the pubic region that blends seamlessly with their abdomen above and then lower limbs below.
If you want to explore your options in more detail then I would always advise getting specialist advice from a fully qualified plastic surgeon.
